"Beardversation"

Over the past few months, I've been hanging out with a lot of people who I haven't seen in a long time. It's kind of awkward when the topic of conversation falls upon my beard. I'll be the first to admit it's not the best beard anyone has ever grown, and when people compliment it, I feel like I'm being patronized.
Besides, what does one say in the event that their beard is complimented? This is not a rhetorical question. Someone tell me.
